What is Success? The big question everyone seeks an answer to.
According to the Oxford dictionary, success is the accomplishment of a desired objective or aim?
There is a feeling you get when you accomplish a thing or achieve your desired result. Whether it be passing an exam, becoming financially affluent, getting a good job, or winning a political campaign-you feel joyful when you fulfill the desired objective.
However, these things are temporal and so is the feeling of happiness that comes with it. Because of the unpredictability of life, it is unwise to rely on outcomes for our happiness.
For example, while you are rejoicing about a new job, you might encounter a demanding boss who makes your work experience unbearable.
To maintain success, we must learn to derive happiness from within, develop tough mental muscles, and the physical effort needed to become the person we want to be.
A Holistic View To Success
To comprehensively answer the question; What is a success, we ought to define success holistically.
Success means being fruitful, happy, and productive spiritually, mentally, and physically.
1. Success is Listening To your Inner Guidance
Let’s begin answering the question; of what is success, by looking at the spiritual dimension of life and the totality of our makeup as human beings.
We (humans) are spiritual beings, with a Soul (Mind), and we live inside a body.
Our Spirit is universal; it is neither male nor female. It is an inner intelligence and compass with which we are led. We can call this inner compass the universal Spirit or the Spirit of intuition or discernment.
We can define spiritual success as the ability to connect with and be guided by the Universal intelligence we call God while enjoying the joy and favor that comes from a relationship with it.
Trust Your Inner Guidance
The world’s biggest problem is conformity. The greatest secret to success is following your intuition or what I call your inner guidance.
Knowing that you are a spirit and that your spirit is connected to the Universal Spirit or divine intelligence we call God, understanding that it has your interest at heart, and allowing its guidance- is the first step to personal success.
When we allow our Spiritual compass to lead us and not our egoistic desires, we achieve an unusual peace that comes from living.
2. What Is Success? Know What You Want!
What do you want? what is success to you?
Let’s paint a picture with this: What do you do when you hate your job but have to pay the bills? Or when you end up with the wrong partner in marriage or a relationship?
What do you do when all you want is wealth but daily you can’t pay your bills?
Answer: Simply do not give up!
Rather develop mental toughness and emotional Intelligence to capture the full essence of life.
Success Is Navigating Difficult times With Peace.
Someone who has developed his mental muscles, will sit back-uncover where he made a mistake, and forgive himself or the people making him uncomfortable until he can exercise peace amidst the difficulty, while perhaps searching for alternatives.
What is success to a man who has not conquered his emotions? A man who is easily angered finds it difficult to forgive, continues to blame himself or others when things go wrong, finds it difficult to obey authority, or subjects himself to authority-have not developed mentally.
Mental success is not about the physical outcomes, but the developing the strength of your character- the ability to develop patience, persistence, and peace while navigating the unpleasant issues of life.
A typical example of a man who achieved mental success before ever achieving Physical success is Benjamin franklin.
3. What is Success To Benjamin Franklin? Set Your Values Right
According to history, when Benjamin Franklin was 20 years old, he identified 13 virtues he wanted to have or develop in himself. He worked on becoming that virtue EVERY DAY, dedicating one month to a specific virtue until he became it.
His virtues are listed below:
- TEMPERANCE. Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.
- SILENCE. Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation.
- ORDER. Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time.
- RESOLUTION. Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.
- FRUGALITY. Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste nothing.
- INDUSTRY. Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions.
- SINCERITY. Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly.
- JUSTICE. Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty.
- MODERATION. Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve.
- CLEANLINESS. Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, cloaths, or habitation.
- TRANQUILLITY. Be not disturbed at trifles, or accidents common or unavoidable.
- CHASTITY. Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another’s peace or reputation.
- HUMILITY. Imitate Jesus and Socrates.
What is success without virtue? Have you seen a successful lustful man? Do you like to hang around them?
But I have come to understand that success has a lot to do with who we become than what we have. What qualities would you like to develop within; to feel more loved, become more confident, and live happier?
4. What Is Success?: An Ability To Learn & Solve Problems
The final step to answering the question what is a success; the ability to learn and adapt
Human beings are the greatest adaptive machines in the universe. Permit yourself to maximize your ability through learning.
Whatever your good intentions are to you, you must develop your problem-solving skills to match your desires. And this is where learning comes in. Learn to solve problems. LEARN!
Millionaire Grant Cardone said something remarkable during an interview with Lewis Howes, he said, you do not necessarily need to start a new business to make a million; rather take a look at millions of existing struggling businesses and help them succeed.
One of the reasons people struggle financially is because of a lack of high-impact, problem-solving skills.
For example sales. Mastering the skill (either through self-help books or paid training) could increase your earning potential beyond your wildest imagination.
And all you need to begin the journey is the willingness to LEARN
My final thoughts on the question: What is success- is that success requires the right frame of mind (inner guidance, intuition, Self-confidence) and the right skills, actions, and knowledge.
